About the Course
What am I going to learn?
Do you want to go beyond scanning raw log lines and start using logs as structured, queryable observability data in Honeycomb? Maybe you’ve already relied on logs to troubleshoot issues, but you want faster ways to spot patterns, isolate errors, and connect log messages to traces for deeper context. Logs are often one of the most detailed sources of system information, but when they’re unstructured, inconsistently formatted, or disconnected from other telemetry, it can be hard to turn them into answers.
In Honeycomb, logs are treated as events, which means you can filter, group, and query across any field, including fields you extract from log bodies, right alongside traces and other signals.
In this course, you’ll learn how to view, search, and explore log data in Honeycomb, investigate incidents using Query Builder and BubbleUp, correlate logs with traces in a trace waterfall, and use calculated fields to uncover patterns hiding inside noisy log messages.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to move from “I see an error” to “I understand what caused it” faster, using logs as part of a complete observability workflow.
How will I learn these things?
This course will teach you how to explore logs in Honeycomb in two ways: videos and short knowledge checks.
Videos explain how to access logs in Honeycomb.
Knowledge checks help reinforce the core ideas so you leave confident in your ability to work with logs on your own.
Hands-on labs give you guided practice searching, exploring, and querying your log data so you can apply what you learn immediately.
What do I need before taking this course to be successful?
Honeycomb account with logs data flowing in.
Prior experience using logs for debugging in any tool (you don’t need to be new to logging).
Familiarity with common logging concepts (log levels/severity, message/body).
-
Familiarity with basic Honeycomb navigation and terminology (datasets, Query Builder, traces).
If you are brand new to Honeycomb and/or tracing, we recommend taking our Observability Foundations and Navigating Honeycomb courses first!
