What am I going to learn in this course?

Do you want to understand what's actually happening inside your systems — without needing to write a single query? Maybe you want to start using AI to investigate your production data, but you're not sure how to get your AI assistant connected to the right tools.

Your production data holds the answers to your most pressing engineering questions, and AI is changing how engineers access that data. With the Honeycomb MCP, your AI assistant can query and interpret your observability data on your behalf, so you can have a conversation about what's happening in your systems instead of learning a query language first.

This course will teach you what the Model Context Protocol is, how the Honeycomb MCP works, and how to use it with your AI assistant so you can investigate real issues, explore your system's behavior, and get value from your observability data through natural language — no querying expertise required.

How will I learn these things?

This course will teach you the Honeycomb MCP in two ways: guided lessons and a hands-on AI skills pack.

  • Guided lessons introduce you to the Model Context Protocol, how the Honeycomb MCP works, and how to configure your AI assistant to connect to it — giving you the foundation and setup you need to hit the ground running.
  • The AI skills pack is a hands-on repository you'll open directly in your AI assistant. It guides you through real investigative scenarios using your own production data, across three learning paths: debugging, SLO management, and data exploration. You choose the path that's most relevant to you and work through it conversationally with your AI assistant.

What do I need before taking this course to be successful?

  • A Honeycomb account with data flowing in. 
    • Don't have an account? Sign up here!
  • Access to your Honeycomb Team's production data.
    • Don't see any data in Honeycomb? Get started here!
  • Access to an AI assistant that supports MCP (Claude Code, for example)
    • If you don't have one set up quite yet, that's okay! We'll walk you through this later on in the course. 
  • Honeycomb Intelligence enabled for your Honeycomb Team. Unsure if you have Honeycomb Intelligence enabled? Go to Account > Team Settings > Team Details > Honeycomb Intelligence. 
    • Only Team Owners can enable and disable Honeycomb Intelligence.
